The mandolin is not a common solo instrument at Iceland Symphony Orchestra concerts, but here we are being visited by the most renowned mandolin player of our time, Avi Avital. He is a charming musician and a magician on his instrument. At this concert, he demonstrates his genius in a classical-era concerto for flute and mandolin by Johann Nepomuk Hummel and also in a concerto for mandolin and recorder by J. S. Bach, with conductor Giovanni Antonini playing the recorder. Antonini is a much-awaited visitor to Iceland, as he conducts all the leading symphony orchestras in the world. Antonini also conducts two symphonies from the classical era, one by Joseph Bologne, who has received increased attention in recent years in the world of classical music – and finally Mozart's masterpiece, Symphony No. 41, which is often called the Jupiter Symphony. It is Mozart's last and most ambitious symphony and also one of the high points of the classical musical tradition.
