World Music in Harpa: Music from East Asia
World Music in Harpa is part of Harpa’s family program, offering guests a chance to experience the music and culture of different regions of the world through live performance, participation, and shared exploration. The series will conclude with a children’s world music festival in June 2026.
At this third event in the series, we explore music from East Asia, focusing on China, Japan, and Mongolia. Guests will be introduced to traditional instruments, learn songs, and take part in a joyful and interactive experience.
The musician Khairkhan lives in Iceland and is originally from Mongolia. He introduces us to Mongolian stringed instruments and throat singing that has been practiced in Mongolia for centuries. Sherine Otomo is an interior designer, born in Japan and has lived in Iceland for several years. She performs poems and songs according to the Japanese Shigin oral tradition. Soprano Xu Wen also performs songs from China accompanied by pianist Arnhildur Valgarðsdóttir.
The concert begins at 1 pm and lasts about 45 minutes.
From 1 pm to 3 pm one can participate in a workshop in Japanese origami where colorful sculptures from beautiful paper are created.
