On Si­lence - Sunday Clas­sics

KIMI Ensemble's concert program Þagnarómur (On Silence) explores the manifestations of silence across language, culture, and history. The program presents works previously composed for the group as well as new premieres by Guðmundur Steinn Gunnarsson and Aya Yoshida, who both capture the essence of silence through the use of traditional Japanese poetry with an Icelandic twist.

The Israeli composer Udi Perlman highlights the silencing and erasing of Palestinian voices, while Kolbeinn Bjarnason uses the poetry of Refat Alareer to show how those silenced voices can bring hope for a better future. Finally, the Danish composer Jeppe Ernst’s carefully crafted choreography fills the concert hall with silent intensity.

KIMI ensemble
KIMI ensemble is a contemporary classical trio consisting of Þórgunnur Anna Örnólfsdóttir, singer, Jónas Ásgeirsson, accordion, and Katerina Anagnostidou, percussion. KIMI specialises in performing new compositions for their unique instrumentation as well as their own arrangements of folk music from their native countries, Iceland and Greece. The trio was founded in Copenhagen in 2018; since then, they have mainly been active in Iceland and Scandinavia, as well as giving numerous premieres in the USA, Greece, and Italy. KIMI have performed at several festivals, such as Venice Art Biennale, NJORD biennale, Copenhagen Vinterjazz, Seigla and Skálholt Summer Concerts - where they were ensemble-in-residence in 2020. Their concert at Skálholt was subsequently nominated as ‘Concert of the Year’ in 2021 at the Iceland Music Awards in the category ‘Classical and Contemporary Music’. The ensemble recently received a nomination as ‘Performer of the year 2025’ at the same awards. Their recording of Bittersweet by Nick Martin (UK) was released as an EP by Dacapo Records in 2022.
