The world-renowned Elisabeth Leonskaja is making good use of her visit to Iceland, and all lovers of piano music are offered a unique opportunity to experience her nuanced playing in a solo concert. Leonskaya was born in Georgia just after the end of World War II. She won the Enesco Piano Competition in 1964 and, for example, played a duo concerto with the legendary Sviatoslav Richter. Since 1978, Leonskaja has resided in Vienna, from where she brings the music of two masters with her. Here, on the one hand, we’ll hear Beethoven's Fantasia for Piano, Op. 77, which the composer likely first improvised at a huge concert in 1808, before committing the work to paper a year later. However, Leonskaja succeeds here in matching Schubert's powerful and moving sonata D 960, which was the last sonata he composed for the instrument shortly before his death and was not published until after his death.
