Spönn is a newly established music collective founded by two musicians with the aim of bridging tradition and innovation in classical music. The collective is led by flautist Kristín Ýr Jónsdóttir and violist Þórhildur Magnúsdóttir.
Spönn’s first concert series consists of three concerts, all connected to the flautist Manuela Wiesler and her lasting influence on Icelandic musical life. This second concert in the series, titled Glitspor, is dedicated to trio repertoire for flute, viola, and harp. For this programme, Kristín Ýr and Þórhildur are joined by harpist Gunnhildur Einarsdóttir. The programme includes the Sonata for Flute, Viola and Harp by Claude Debussy, Kveðja by Þorkell Sigurbjörnsson, composed in memory of Manuela, and Petite Suite by André Jolivet, among other works.
The concert aims to honour and celebrate the legacy of the flautist Manuela Wiesler. The year 2025 marked what would have been Manuela’s 70th birthday, and this year marks the 20th anniversary of her passing, making it a particularly fitting occasion to commemorate this extraordinary musician. Manuela’s years in Iceland had a profound impact on the country’s musical life. Numerous new works for flute were composed for her, she taught a generation of young flautists, and she played an important role in promoting and publishing contemporary Icelandic classical music.
Duration: approx. 75 mins, without intermission.
