The New Reyk­javik Trio | Harpa on Reyk­javík Cul­ture Night

The New Reykjavík Trio, consisting of pianist Liam Kaplan, violinist Herdís Mjöll Guðmundsdóttir, and cellist Geirþrúður Anna Guðmundsdóttir, presents a beautiful lunchtime concert on Culture Night. In this 30-minute programme, the trio performs selected movements from Dvořák’s Dumky Piano Trio alongside Liam Kaplan’s new arrangements of beloved Icelandic songs.

Founded in 2025, the New Reykjavík Trio quickly received critical acclaim for its “remarkable cohesion” and “dynamic and poetic performances” (Morgunblaðið). Named in honour of the legendary Reykjavík Trio, the ensemble aims to carry forward the distinguished piano trio tradition that its predecessor established in Iceland.

The trio brings together violinist Herdís Mjöll Guðmundsdóttir, cellist Geirþrúður Anna Guðmundsdóttir, and pianist Liam Kaplan. All three have performed in leading concert halls around the world, including Carnegie Hall, the Southbank Centre, the Warsaw Philharmonic, the Tíbrá concert series, and Harpa Concert Hall. They have also appeared as soloists with ensembles including the Iceland Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Academy of Music Symphony Orchestra, the Oberlin Sinfonietta, the Oberlin Orchestra, and the Aspen Conducting Academy Orchestra.

Liam Kaplan is Principal Keyboard of the Iceland Symphony Orchestra, while Herdís Mjöll is a violinist with the Minnesota Orchestra in the United States. Geirþrúður Anna performs throughout Europe as a soloist and chamber musician and will release her debut album on Orchid Classics later this year.

The trio will return to Norðurljós in spring 2027 as part of the Classical Sundays concert series. Geirþrúður Anna and Liam Kaplan will also give solo recitals in the same series later this autumn.
