Duo Edda is a Nordic ensemble consisting of the Danish violinist Vera Panitch and Icelandic cellist Steiney Sigurðardóttir. They began their musical cooperation in 2018 when they met in Iceland Symphony Orchestra in Reykjavík where they both have leading positions, Vera as 2nd concertmaster and Steiney as co-principal cellist. The duo has received support from
amongst others The Rannís foundation in Iceland and recently won 3rd prize at the prestigious
P2 Chamber Music Competition 2020 in Copenhagen. Duo Edda has received lessons and coaching from Noah Bendix-Balgley (concertmaster of the Berlin Philharmonics), Matthew Truscott (concertmaster of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra),
Henrik Dam Thomsen (principal cellist of the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra), Frederik Øland (violinist in the Danish String Quartet), Alexandre Zapolski (teacher at the Royal Danish Academy of Music) and Tim Frederiksen (professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Music).
Vera Panitch is born in 1993 in Copenhagen. She received her Bachelor-, Master- and Soloist degree from the Royal Danish Academy of Music with Alexandre Zapolski as her main teacher and Tim Frederiksen as her chamber music professor. She travels often to Berlin to take lessons with concertmaster Noah Bendix-Balgley and has played at countless masterclasses for renowned violinists and musicians during her studies. Vera has had the honor of receiving many scholarships and support amongst the latest from Van Hauen foundation, Augustinus foundation and the Sonning Talent Prize. As previously mentioned she is a leader in Iceland Symphony Orchestra and besides playing chamber music is also an active soloist.
Steiney Sigurdardottir, born in 1996, started learning the cello at the age of five, and went on to study at the Tónlistarskólinn í Reykjavík and Icelandic Academy of the Arts with Sigurgeir Agnarsson and Gunnar Kvaran. She graduated in 2015, receiving the Halldór Hansen award for outstanding final exam.
Steiney commenced her Bachelor studies in 2016 at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik Trossingen in Germany, under Prof. Francis Gouton. Her time in Germany included masterclasses with a number of prestigious cellists, such as Troels Svane, Roland Pioux, Wenn Sin Yang, Sadao Harada and Maria Kliegel.
Steiney has performed as a soloist with the Orchestra of the Music school in Reykjavík, Sinfóníuhljómsveit Unga Fólksins, Reykjavik Chamber Orchestra and the Iceland Symphony Orchestra. In 2019, after performing the Dvorak cello concerto in the Siglufjörður Folk Music Festival, Steiney completed her Bachelor studies in Germany with the highest possible grade for her final recital, and won the position of subprincipal cello at the Iceland Symphony Orchestra.
