Johan Sebastian Bach - Suite for cello no. 5

In the early summer of 2020, having been isolating in New York City for the first months of the pandemic, Sæunn Thorsteinsdóttir packed her cello and traveled to Iceland. The project entailed playing the complete cycle of the Six Suites for Solo Cello by Johann Sebastican Bach, one by one in six different churches around the WestFjords. On the Summer Solstice, churches filled with audiences where many followed Sæunn from church to church, fjord to fjord, until the last Suite sounded as the sun grazed the Arctic ocean at midnight. In the following year, Sæunn recorded all six Suites and this concert is to celebrate the album's release on the Sono Luminus label.

On the program are three of the Suites by Bach, as well as two contemporary works for solo cello; Benjamin Britten´s 1st Suite for Solo Suite, which Sæunn recorded on her debut album and is heavily influenced by the Bach Suites, as well as 48 Images of the Moon by Þuríður Jónsdóttir, which is on Sæunn's recent album of music by Icelandic composers, Vernacular, and which Þuríður wrote for her.

Sæunn is one of Iceland's pre-eminent cellists and her performances in the major halls around the world such as Carnegie Hall, have been lauded by audiences and critics alike. She is Artist in Residence with the Iceland Symphony during the 2022-23 season and the concerts are in the Symphony's Black series. In the series are four concerts in which Sæunn performs a wide variety of works for cello, including this solo concert.
